5 REASONS TO VOTE YES! 1) Safety The completion of the high school project with these facilities would allow our student body to all be together under one roof making the school much more secure in emergency situations. Building a new high school but leaving the gym across the street in the old building causes safety concerns. In the case of an active shooting event or other potentially dangerous situation, having two separate facilities can cause a delay which could cost lives. During an active shooter event officers are trained to respond to the school and advance to the sounds of gunfire or other threats. We are back to the same issue we tried to address about 10 years ago - a split campus. Having facilities on both sides of the street means that students will still be required to move across Capital Street throughout the day for certain classes, and sport-related events, disrupting traffic and creating the opportunity for accidents and student harm, in a distraction-rich environment. 2) It will never be cheaper This bond is asking for $17 million dollars to build athletic facilities as well as the demolition of the old high school. It is an assurance that the cost of adding these facilites later on would rise above that number. Along with the cost of upkeep of having TWO high schools. The upkeep cost of the current high school is $200,000 per year and that is without any repairs that will need to be made. This is money wasted if we wait to build. The impact on your taxes is $44 per $100,000 of valuation. Even on a $1 million dollar home, that is only $1.25 per day. 3) Support School Activities Approximately 75% of our students are student athletes. These facilities affect a TON of students. It also provides more opportunity for youth athletes to have access to a gym and weight room to enhance their development. 4) Community Benefit Quality schools with quality facilities are a priority for families considering Mitchell as their home. Better programs and school facilities will attract and train an improved workforce, making Mitchell a more desirable place for families to live and add to the collective quality of life in Mitchell. 5) Much Needed Improvement It has been said by athletes, coaches, and community members that Mitchell has, bar none, the worst athletic facilities in AA and possibly the entire State. No A/C in the gym, lack of space, lack of locker rooms, no hot water in the girls and coaches locker rooms, the main gym is too small to host events, lack of storage space. The list goes on and on. This has been needed for a LONG time and these problems will only get worse the longer we wait to build. THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL IS BEING BUILT REGARDLESS OF THE OUTCOME OF THIS ELECTION.
