In that time, we've grown responsibly by building ag processing facilities and creating jobs in rural areas across South Dakota and the Midwest. POET also chose Sioux Falls as the site for our worldwide headquarters, which continues to attract talented professionals to our city. We love Sioux Falls. It's our hometown. That's why we view plans to build new slaughterhouses in city limits as a serious threat to the future of our community that could fundamentally change the character of Sioux Falls. POET As South Dakota's largest ag company, POET is and always has been dedicated to creating opportunities for farm families by growing value-added agriculture, We support all types of ag processing; however, we are concerned about additional industrial slaughterhouses in our city when there are better locations in rural areas. POET would never build a bioethanol plant inside Sioux Falls city limits. POET has a duty to our more than 3,000 farmer investors to protect the value of our headquarters and our ability to attract world-class talent to live and work here. And we're not alone. Over 10,000 residents signed the petition to give voters the choice on more slaughterhouses, and over 50 Sioux Falls businesses and organizations voiced concerns in a letter to city officials on the matter. New slaughterhouses within city limits raise serious concerns about truck traffic, odor, workforce shortages, water use, and wastewater discharge into the Big Sioux River-all of which need to be examined more closely We cannot in good conscience stand by and watch as new slaughterhouses jeopardize the quality of life for our team members, our families, and our more than 200,000 neighbors who live and work in this community. It's time to let the people decide.
