In railroad terms, a “siding” is a stretch of track running parallel with the mainline, allowing trains to pass. Historically, a well and water tower were usually established at the siding to supply water to steam locomotives. With a water supply and transportation available, a small community (what is now White Lake) began to emerge along this historic stretch of railroad called Siding 36. Located just 36 miles west of Mitchell, Siding 36 is conveniently “mid-track” between Mitchell and Chamberlain, South Dakota, in the heart of Pheasant County, in east central South Dakota.
