Thune Hardware was established in Mitchell, SD in the mid 1930’s by Matt Thune. His sons, Sid and Gordon joined the family business which they continued to operate as Thune True Value Hardware (joining the True Value hardware affiliation in 1954) until selling the business to Spencer and Kathy Gross in 1979. Spencer and Kathy moved the store to its current location 1400 North Main street in 1992. Jennifer Cooper, their daughter, joined the family business in 1991, and her husband, Tommy followed in 1998 as our factory trained service technician. The store has continued to evolve to meet the demands of the consumer in today’s economy. The hardware side of the store continues to meet the needs of the do-it-yourselfer with expanded “core” departments in paint/sundries, Hillman brand fasteners, plumbing, electrical and lawn & garden. Their knowledgeable staff is the mainstay of the store. Spencer has nurtured the appliance section of the store so that today it occupies the larger portion of the store’s square footage. Thune’s Home Appliance Center features Frigidaire, Electrolux, Bosch, Maytag and KitchenAid appliances. They feature five “live” kitchen settings to help the consumer visualize their appliance purchase and try grammas favorite cookie recipe if need be. They also have laundry stations set to see if that comforter fits. They offer delivery and installation by their professional installers.
